BAS vs IAS?

BAS vs IAS: What’s the Difference?

Many business owners are familiar with the term BAS (Business Activity Statement), but fewer understand the purpose of an IAS (Instalment Activity Statement). While both are forms issued by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO), they serve different purposes and have different reporting requirements.

Understanding the difference can help ensure your business remains compliant and avoids unnecessary penalties.

What is a BAS?

A Business Activity Statement (BAS) is used by businesses to report and pay various tax obligations, including:

  • Goods and Services Tax (GST)
  • Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding from employee wages
  • PAYG instalments (if applicable)
  • Other tax obligations depending on the business

Businesses registered for GST are generally required to lodge a BAS monthly, quarterly, or annually, depending on their reporting cycle.

What is an IAS?

An Instalment Activity Statement (IAS) is used when a business needs to report and pay certain tax obligations but is not required to report GST for that period.

Most commonly, an IAS is issued to businesses that:

  • Withhold PAYG tax from employee wages
  • Report PAYG withholding monthly

For example, a business may lodge:

  • An IAS each month for PAYG withholding, and
  • A BAS at the end of each quarter for GST and other obligations.

Key Differences

BASIAS
Reports GST and other tax obligationsUsually reports PAYG withholding and instalments only
Issued to businesses registered for GSTOften issued between BAS reporting periods
May include GST, PAYG withholding and PAYG instalmentsDoes not generally include GST reporting
Monthly, quarterly or annual lodgementCommonly monthly lodgement

Why Do Some Businesses Receive Both?

It is common for businesses to lodge both BAS and IAS forms.

For example, a business may:

  • Report GST quarterly through a BAS.
  • Report employee PAYG withholding monthly through an IAS.

This allows the ATO to collect employee withholding amounts more regularly while GST continues to be reported quarterly.

Staying Compliant

Missing a BAS or IAS lodgement can result in penalties, interest charges and unnecessary stress. Keeping accurate bookkeeping records and maintaining up-to-date payroll information makes the lodgement process much easier.

Working with a registered BAS Agent can help ensure your obligations are met correctly and on time.
